authentic to surfing

Surfing is so incredibly fun that for decades people have poured an incomprehensible amount of time, effort, and creativity into finding ways to get some.

evolution
This massive investment of time, effort, and energy sparked countless innovations and ignited the evolution from surf into skate and then into snow.
emerging styles
As board sports evolved, new disciplines or styles emerged. Freestyle, vert, and street emerged through the evolution of skate; park, pipe, and freeride through the evolution of snow.
feature driven
Some styles emerged as a result of new features dreamt up by others in search of fun.
We dreamt of surfing features shaped of water because this style of riding is fun and familiar for us.
this is our story...

waves don't break in our backyard

We came from the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by an abundance of features made of concrete, dirt, and snow. Surfing is super fun, but access was a problem.

access

Access meant able to surf daily. This meant close to home, like surfing in our community pool.

approach

Our approach is unconventional, and is influenced not by surfing in the ocean, but by riding features like tabletops, hips, and spines.

It took a decade to advance an idea of shaping waves in our community pool from a concept to reality.

challenging convention takes time

our purpose

We are passionate in our purpose to share surfing. Through boardsports we found purpose, identity, confidence, and voice. We built lasting memories, friendships, and bonds through the experiences we shared in the mountains and at the bowl.

Ka’ana. To share.

our mission

Our mission is to make surfing accessible. This means breaking down the barriers to entry for everyone.

breaking down barriers
We celebrate the creativity, freedom of expression, and individuality that comes from riding on a board. Over time, we learned that what is authentic for one person may be different for another.

Just as riding handrails on a snowboard is authentic to a kid in Detroit, and riding knee deep powder is authentic to a girl riding backcountry in Alaska, the “authentic surf experience” is subjective, and is the experience that is both fun and accessible to the person who is riding on the board.
new features,
new styles
Surfing evolves, and new styles emerge when features come along that are more fun and more accessible for some people. This becomes their “authentic surf experience,” and they will seek out destinations that can deliver that experience.

An unrelenting drive to go surfing led us on a journey to create fun new features to surf, as close to home as in our community pool. If these features help to foster new styles of surfing it is for the next generation to decide. We’re just having fun.

Our Timeline

2009

Observation in Aguas Calientes.
Water barreling in a dog-leg box drain amid a rainstorm in Peru.

2012

Thought experiment in Polynesia. Concludes that stationary and continuous barreling waves must be possible. Concept to produce stationary, deep-water barreling waves is created.

2014

2014: CM7-Series design concept produces stationary barreling wave at model scale.

2016

CM7-Series design principles are established. These principles would evolve to form Ka’ana’s brand promise to deliver Anywave, Anywhere, for Anyone.

2016

CM7-Series IP is filed as “Wave Producing Method and Apparatus”.

2017

Design concept scales computationally. CFD modeling is completed to confirm scale-ability.

2018

Design concept scales physically. 5x scale model is built and tested to validate CFD modeling results.

2019

Ka'ana Wave Company. Team Ka’ana is assembled. The Ka’ana brand is born. Ka’ana. To share.

2020

Minimum Surf-able Wave. Team activates two-week pilot to validate the product on the smallest surf-able scale.

2021

Ka’ana reveals big “firsts” in surf tech. First stationary, deep-water: Barrel. Boat Wake. River Jump.

2022

Ka’ana signs partnership with Polin Waterparks. Partnership expands market reach in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

where it all began

2009
Water is observed barreling in a dog-leg box drain amid a rainstorm in Peru.
2012
A thought in Polynesia sparked by a Tim McKenna photo and a story about Einstein and relativity leads to the hypothesis that stationary and continuous, bathymetry-agnostic barreling waves must be possible.
A concept to produce these stationary, deep-water barreling waves is identified.
2014
CM7-Series design concept produces first stationary barreling wave at model scale.
2016
CM7-Series design principles are established. These principles will evolve to form Ka’ana’s brand promise to deliver Anywave, Anywhere, for Anyone.
CM7-Series IP is filed as “Wave Producing Method and Apparatus”.
A numbered company is incorporated but will remain nameless for another 3 years.
2017
Design concept scales 20x through computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
2018
Design concept scales physically. 5x scale model is built and tested to validate CFD modeling results.
2019
Team Ka’ana is assembled and the Ka’ana brand is born. Ka’ana. To share.
2020
Ka’ana activates two-week pilot surf pool to validate the product on the smallest surf-able scale.
2021
Ka’ana reveals big “firsts” in the surf tech space while publishing model scale images of a bathymetry-agnostic right break barrel, boat wake, and river jump.
Ka’ana signs partnership with AdvanTec Global Innovations Inc. Partnership provides Ka’ana with the resources to rapidly scale manufacturing and provide global support.
Ka’ana CM7-Series wins Brass Ring Award for Best New Product at the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Florida.
2022
Ka’ana celebrates the launch of the CM7-Series with a 2-month pop-up surf park at Britannia Beach, British Columbia.
Ka’ana signs partnership with leading waterpark manufacturer Polin Waterparks, expanding Ka’ana’s market reach in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
2023
Ka’ana signs partnership to bring surfing to Crystal Lagoons venues world-wide. Upon signing, the CM7-Series becomes the first and only wave technology to be certified for installation in Crystal Lagoons.
